Rattlesnakes are already causing misery for Orange County pets and their owners.

Bodie, a 6-year-old Siberian Huskey, got bit in hills near San Clemente. His neck swelled to about three times its normal size and he was in extreme pain.

Fortunately, Bodie’s owners had him vaccinated against rattlesnake bites last year. He still required expensive, emergency treatment, but survived the attack.

Full story in the OC register: http://www.ocregister.com/news/bodie-235382-say-rattlesnake.html

At Yolinda Animal Hospital, we offer the rattlesnake vaccine for only $18. We recommend it be given to all dogs who accompany their owners on hiking, fishing, hunting or camping trips. Please call us on (714) 524-1156 for more information.

Rattlesnake bite first aid

Transport your pet to a veterinarian as quickly as possible, whether it has been vaccinated or not.

Keep exercise to a minimum en route to the clinic.

Don’t touch or manipulate the area around the bite, or attempt to suck out the venom.

Take care that your dog doesn’t bite anyone – snake bites are really painful and even mild-mannered dogs may be motivated to bite.
