Our seventh newsletter is finally out! In this issue:

Dr. Olsen speaks at commencement ceremony

Owner / veterinarian of Yolinda Animal Hospital Dr. Rana Olsen was the commencement speaker at the graduation of the class of 2010 of Crafton Hills College, Yucaipa, which took place last Thursday, May 20th.

In an inspirational speech, Dr. Olsen drew on her experiences as a veterinarian, business owner, and animal advocate to encourage the graduates to aim high and work hard, noting “Though no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending.”

Crafton Hills College President Gloria Harrison said ‘We are very proud that Dr. Olsen is an alumnus of Crafton Hills’. Dr. Olsen said ‘Being asked to speak at the commencement ceremony was an incredible honor’.

A new, state-of-the-art antibiotic

If your pet falls ill, he or she may be prescribed a course of antibiotics. In the past, this meant you had to give your pet pills. Depending on your pet, this may be easier said than done! We are now offering a new type of antibiotic called Convenia. Convenia is special because it is administered by a single injection (given by one of our veterinarians). A single injection lasts two weeks! It can be given to both dogs and cats. Pet owners whose pets have been treated with Convenia report they are very happy:

No more having to pill their pet.
No more worrying that if they continually pill their pet, their pet will grow to resent them.
No more worrying about missing a dose.

Convenia is not suitable for all infections or all pets. Ask us about Convenia if your pet needs antibiotics in the future.

Rattlesnake vaccine could save your dog’s life

Rattlesnakes are already causing misery for Orange County pets and their owners. Bodie, a 6-year-old Siberian Huskey, got bit in hills near San Clemente. His neck swelled to about three times its normal size and he was in extreme pain. Fortunately, Bodie’s owners had him vaccinated against rattlesnake bites last year. He still required expensive, emergency treatment, but survived the attack. Rattlesnake bite first aid

Transport your pet to a veterinarian as quickly as possible, whether it has been vaccinated or not.
Keep exercise to a minimum en route to the clinic.
Don’t touch or manipulate the area around the bite, or attempt to suck out the venom.
Take care that your dog doesn’t bite anyone – snake bites are really painful and even mild-mannered dogs may be motivated to bite.
