Early detection

Kidney disease is a main cause of illness and death in pets, but symptoms do not usually appear until about 2/3 of kidney function has been lost. If detected early, before symptoms appear, pets can live with the condition for many years.

Our early detection program is a new way of doing medicine, in which we seek to make the most of technological advancements that allow the diagnosis and treatment of disease before your pet appears to be ill. This is done by a combination of physical examination, the most modern of blood panels, urinalysis, and fecal examinations. As can be seen from the tables below, both cats and dogs age much more quickly than people, and therefore the 12 months that elapse between annual wellness bloodwork is really anywhere from about four to ten ‘dog years’ or ‘cat years’. So, although having bloodwork done on an apparently well pet every year may seem excessively frequent, it’s not.

Role of vaccines

Annual vaccines are an important but small part of overallwellness, and therefore we mail out reminders for wellness examinations, bloodwork, urinalysis, and parasite screenings – in addition to the reminders for vaccines. Please help us help your pet by scheduling an appointment as soon as possible after you receive a reminder.
